Shaving Every Day

I like to take a break on the weekend. However, I found that I get more comfortable shaves if I shave every day. I know this seems counterintuitive. Specifically, I seem to be able to do a better job on my chin if I just maintain it on a daily basis. I f I go a couple of days without shaving, I find I have to take multiple passes and I sort of have to play "Catch-up" on subsequent days. As a relatively new wet shaver, is this a common experience?

IMO it is a common occurrence, however it is down to fine tuning and technique, at least this was the case for myself. Personal skin condition aside, I find the shave from a more efficient razor with the right technique and prep is better on alternate or even every 3rd day for me, as it is when shaving on a daily basis, with a mild razor. In other words duration made no difference once I had the correct approach, tool and technique for the given situation. It is all a learning curve cultivated by personal preference.

+1 on Nishy's point. Let me add that when skipping a day or more, depending on razor/blade/lather, the first pass may be a little tuggy, but I nevertheless end up with a smoother post shave feel and it also often feels as if I got a closer shave. Not sure if that owes merely to the relatively bigger contrast between two days+ whiskers and clean shaved skin or if it actually renders a closer shave.

Side note, for those who struggle with sore skin, razor burns, allowing the skin time to heal by skipping a day is also advisable.

I could also be that if you are trying to remove all whiskers in one pass then leaving it grow a few days will make that difficult. Personally I don't go for the one pass shave. I take the view that shaving is the gradual reduction of beard growth through multiple passes on my daily shaves. Basically with the grain, across the grain and against the grain. Takes a bit longer but you are not inclined to use too much as in trying for a one pass shave. Quite comfortable when using little to no pressure.

Daily shaving works for me. I sometimes, though rarely, shave on the second day but found if I left it for more I would get very sore post shave and more than likely get cut. My skin responds well to regular shaves, plus I enjoy doing it! Of course, what works for me may not work for others.

I’ll basically second what has already been said. The post-shave feel after mowing down 2–3 days of growth seems much better than after a daily shave. However, there is usually a little less tugging during the first pass if I had shaved the previous day.

For me, shaving only every other day would probably be optimal, but I like shaving too much to do that. I try to have a shave-free day at least once a week, though. Gives the skin a little break.

Daily shaves are more comfortable yes and your skin sort of gets immune to the blade edge, its like the skin gets more resistant and its harder to get irritation.

Now as far as goes results wise achieving better shaves, then I have to say every other day shaving is better. For some reason 1 day the beard doesn't grow large enough for the safety bar to lift the whiskers, 2nd day is just right and I always end getting better shaves every 2nd day vs daily shaves. I do however shave every day

I decided to slow down and devote more time and attention to my shave. My chin is my trouble spot. I re lathered and made multiple passes from every imaginable angle and I got an excellent result using very light pressure. I'm thinking of trying the alternate day pattern. I'm just a little concerned about how I'll look on the off days.

Stretching a blade to get undue mileage is another reason why many folks get irritation, razor burns or ingrown hair.

I used to enjoy shaving daily but have given it up. I now shave every other day and as a result have better shaves and no irritation on my neck... As a bonus my software now lasts twice as long

Since I shave every day for professionnal reasons I adopted the following routine: on a day growth a mild razor with a sharp blade (for exemple Hone 15a with Feather blade), on 2 days growth (or more) a more aggressive razor.

As far as I am concerned best post shave feeling is after 2 days growth. Maybe it is psychological as mentioned by Halvor.

Concerning sore skin my feeling is that it is more linked to overused blades or poor soap/brush combinaison.
