Relatively new safety razor hitting a few speed bumps; Suggestions…

I’ve had a Rockwell 6S for a few months and made the transition from plate R1 up to R4,5,6 the past month or so, trying to find out which one will give me the closest shave without neck nicks. I’ve become pretty hit or miss with this and I may be a combination of more recently using R5/6, but also trying to get super close on the high neck/jawline, and experimenting with different ways to get this area as smooth as my face. No matter the plate, my cheeks are always perfectly smooth. I usually do 1 pass on the cheeks and upper face, then 2 full ones on the neck/jaw, and maybe a 3rd in some clean-up areas. Using Proraso sensitive pre-shave and shaving cream and Silver Blue blades and I’ve only been doing 5 full shave a blade.

For my second neck/jaw passes, I’m still trying to figure this out and this is where I’d love any suggestions/thoughts. I’ve tried diagonally from lower face toward the center of my neck, starting at the upper neck and digonally up the neck toward my lips, and today, almost a straight against the grain from under the ear to the middle of my chin/neck. Definitely saw a few red speckles today down there. Any suggestions for the best way to try to attack this area? I’m not sure if I should move back down to an R4 plate, or stay with the more efficient R5/6 b/c I don’t really feel uncomfortable with the blade feel and the problem area is just actually my technique/passes. I usually shave 2-3 times a week, but today I shaved back to back for the first time.

Thanks,
Mike

Forum GOD!
Could be your choice of blades that's part of the problem.

And maybe use the bigger gaps for the first two passes and go smaller for the last/touch ups.

I personally have given up trying to achieve BBS as that third pass leaves me sore.

@semajohn and @wooky114:

1) I think I have it mapped out pretty well: My entire face grows down, The center of my neck grows down, below the jawlines grow from my ears across my neck to the center of the neck, and the lower half of my neck on either side of the middle grows up.

2) On the BBS thing, that’s the only time I run into any problems. It’s on that last pass (3 or so) trying to get the last little non-smooth areas. I’ve always tried to keep it simple by keeping one plate on the whole time but no I’m inclined to try to put it down to R3 or to try to get that last little bit…..or try to ignore it!

3) I like the blades. I didn’t like the Rockwells blades that came with it at all.

Thx.

Trying to elevate shaving to an art form to be mastered is a fool's errand and chasing BBS is a path to misery

Have a shave, look in mirror, think "you'll do", blow yourself a little kiss and crack on with enjoying the rest of your day
I agree. Unless it’s an occasion. Wedding / funeral / interview.

with and across grain passes are just fine. Work / restaurant / day out. Or even just an every day shave.

to get BBS you really need or want it. It’s not a must

You have not been at it that long with the Rockwell 6S and only shave infrequently as opposed to daily. I would say just concentrate on improving your shaving technique and possibly dropping back a couple of plate numbers. Don't be in a rush, it just takes time.

Hi - just wanted to post an update here. The past several weeks I’ve been using R4 and shaving maybe 2x a week. Today I decided it move back to R3 after reading a lot of good stuff about the Henson mild al13 producing a great shave. I was shocked with the R3 because I got the closest shave I’ve gotten so far on 2+ passes. - particularly under my chin and on the jawline. I think maybe this is because there was less blade feel so I could move across and against the grain easier on the second and cleanup passes.

really glad I got this razor.

It might also be that you got better at keeping the required angle, so the milder plate also seems more efficient now.
