In praise of the shim

Wow! Yesterday I had my ATT M1 plate for sale on the BST I thought I'd off load it for what I paid for it as I struggled to get a decent shave out of it without excessive passes which led to irritation. I had a brainwave, not like me, to try it with a shim. The difference is night and day. I took an old blade and carefully cut both edges off it with scissors, then used this between the blade and bottom plate (for anyone who doesn't know what a shim is or what to do with one)
Anyway it has as Fly said probably turned it into a M 1.5 plate and it is still smooth and less aggressive than the R2 and it gave a wonderful shave. I had it on BST for nearly a full day but with no takers and boy am I glad now. If you have a mild razor why not try a shim you have nothing to lose and it may just put a razor back into your rotation.

Might try this with my Hone Type 15. Love the razor but the shave just isn't as close as I'd like.

Shims can do wonders for mediocre razors, at times. At the moment, I am using 2 of them in my Weber DLC.

I'm so glad I read this thread thanks @wayne mattison . I've just made a shim for my mild 34c HD. The results were amazing . It's just given me the closed BBS shave ever achieved with this razor. I've also just watched a youtube vid of a bloke making a shim from a old credit card or margarine tub. Who'd have thought!
My trusted old 34c will now be outded more often. Best blades for me are Pol-Silver's SI from Gemstone Trading. Avoid flebay at all costs...too many fakes being sold there.

Just shaved with a single shim in my Hone type 15. It gave it just that tiny bit more bite to achieve a very good BBS with no irritation. Now if only Hone would supply a brass shim set !
