I can't imagine many face masks are 3 layer woven cotton, I still believe 99% of the masks used are as effective as a chocolate teapot,

woven cotton fabrics to show that three-layered cloth masks can be constructed with comparable filtration performance to surgical masks under ideal conditions.

Not to mention the number of masks I've seen worn that have exhalation valves. Assuming that this is actually a valve and not just some bit of plastic stuck on by the guy on eBay you bought it from, exhaled air and droplets will go straight out through the valve thus negating the point of wearing it.

what I’ve noticed is they still let in smells, walk anywhere near the college smoking area and the heavy scent of vape hangs in the air. So if I can smell it would it let in any particles carried with the smell ? Often you’ll hear people say I can’t wear a mask as I have asthma, surely Though getting covid would be far more dangerous ? I don’t know, so many factors.

Now it looks as well lucky us over 50’s will get an extra booster with the Flu jab.

Anything you smell is particles so yes, it will absolutely let them in. That's why they fit-test respirators using banana oil, if you smell bananas there's a leak. As for asthmatics, if they're genuine and not just using it as an excuse not to wear a mask, they're probably working on the principle that the very minor risk of catching Covid if they stay two metres from other people is a lesser evil than having their already sub-optimal breathing restricted by a mask.

I suspect a lot of people are taking advantage of the fact that mask-exemption has no way of being checked for validity, which rather like back pain, is to the detriment of those who genuinely can't tolerate one for whatever reason.

An effective cotton fabric mask would have to be thick enough to asphyxiate you.

My second injection on Thursday. Agree your point on smelling cigarettes, but then I find that they smell very strong to me anyway now, workmen were smoking at next door's house 50 yards away, I found the smell of the smoke so strong that I nearly phoned the fire brigrade.

My dad was a heavy smoker, I’ve never smoked, I can smell cigarette smoke two houses down when they get in their garden, hate it. Each to their own on smoking. My old dad died of lung cancer, he tried many a time but was never able to give in, even on his death bed he wanted a smoke !

I have nothing interesting to say. But has that ever stopped me? I'm now just over two weeks out from having my vaccination. I got the J&J vaccine so one shot and I'm done, unless they recommend a booster later on. But I still wear a mask when I go out and am around other people. If I'm alone in my car, I definitely do not wear it. Seems kind of silly to me. Most of the time it's either just me or my family in the car so I rarely wear a mask in the car unless someone from outside our household is riding along. I continue to be amazed at the level of selfishness out there related to mask wearing and social distancing. You can argue about the CDC or other health organizations directives and their contradiction but there is one thing that is irrefutable. The only times that the number of people being infected has gone down has been when lockdowns were put in place and when mask wearing and social distancing was mostly observed. And as a result, the only times the rate of infection has gone up was when people decided they no longer wanted to wear a mask and didn't need to social distance. Those are facts. Everything else is just conjecture. And conjecture is is for......well.......you get my drift.
