Good things to pick up in Amsterdam/NL

I'm heading to Amsterdam (or nearby) this weekend and am looking for recommendations for local brands that I can find there but not in the UK. I lived there for 5 years but had never thought of shaving with a DE, so no idea what to look for, but have seen syu.nl and De Vergulde Hand recommended on an old wicked_edge thread.

Is there anything else that I should look for and would I find it in an average Etos/Kruidvat or would be looking for specialist retailers?

We were there recently, sadly pretty much struck out, there was some local Dutch aftershave that I’d have picked up, but it came as a roll on or pad dispenser!

Ah, I haven't been bitten by the aftershave bug, so 3 soaps are the only scented things that I have at the moment.

If you should roam faaaar from Amsterdam, to the areas of Breda or Zwolle, there are shaving supplies to be found. Het Scheerhuijs and Barbiere di Figaro. I too lived in Amsterdam but sported a beard at that time so no interest in digging up gear. I think Kruidvat stocks Vergulde Hand though.

In my case it is the opposite. After more than six years using brush and soap I have come to the conclusion that vegetable soaps work best on my skin.

Tallow soaps leave my skin too oily and that affects the following shaves. After trying a lot of tallow soaps from a bunch of manufacturers, I only keep Palmolive Stick and Mitchell's, the rest is vegetable soap and Whickham 1912 is one of my three essential soaps.

I wish you all the luck of the world if you decide to make a tallow line but I will continue enjoying my vegetables 1912

Kruidvat also have specials on mens fragrances, certainly worth checking out.

Luckily after returning from the Netherlands I found an Avon equivalent to Amando-Mystery EDT, (Infinite Moment for Him) and am fully stocked on this.

Another good brand to check out is Mexx

I don't recall seeing The Master Perfumer brand before but might be worth checking out.

If you should have enough time to take a trip to Den Haag, (about 50 minutes on the train from Amsterdam) then check out the oldest Dutch Chemist, (Opened in 1796) Drogisterij parfumerie van der Gaag. Click on the SCHEREN button on this page; http://drogisterijvandergaag.nl/

The train station, Den Haag Centraal is very close to the shop about 5 mins walk. It's a great day out as you also have a lot to do in this area.

A short tram ride away you also have Scheveningen beach, this is a really nice beach with many open air Cafe's running along it's stretch. All of them offer a great place to kick back with a beer.

Alas I won't, though have been there before. I've got a weekend filled with family stuff and catching up with friends. Thanks for the knowledge though, have some Mexx aftershave which I was gifted years ago but haven't tried any of their other non-clothing items.

Well, managed to find some De Vergulde Hand in Etos, €1.75 for 75g, so bought a couple to try out. Other than that, not had time to look for much, but struck out on anything DE related at a small antique market
