Completed Schick Krona TTO

Thanks to the generosity of @Steve Bowles, I can offer a pass around of a Schick Krona razor.

This is a highly regarded Twist-To-Open (TTO) razor made by Schick from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s.

If you’re new to the whole pass around malarky and want to know more, you can have a look at this article. Don’t be scared by the length of the article. I tried to cover every possible angle. It’s all quite simple, really.

Here are the rules:
This pass around is open ended. The list will not close. Once the pass around is ‘finished’, the razor will come back to me (or stay with the last recipient), but it will be sent out again to anyone who is interested in trying it.
Shipping is by ‘signed for’ delivery. Second class will do. You send the tracking number to the recipient and to myself (@sɐǝɹpu∀).
You are responsible for the razor from the time you receive it until the time the next person signs for it.
Use the razor as much as you like, but don’t hog it and pass it on when you’re done with it.
Let us know how you get on with the razor. Share your experience.
When you are done using the razor and are ready to pass it on, please clean the razor. Nobody really likes handling a dirty razor.
So, who’s interested?

Day 1 - Shave 1

The Schick Krona arrived this morning.
I gave it good clean and polish for a small photo shoot.
Here are the results:

The razor is in pretty good nick, but the end cap with the Schick logo at the bottom of the handle is missing - this seems to be a common issue, but it has no effect on the shave.

Here's what it would have looked like:

Of course I had a shave with it:
  • De Vergulde Hand shaving soap
  • TOST LE 2018 brush
  • Schick Krona
  • Astra Superior Platinum blade
  • Alum block
  • Hagner Tobacco ASL
First of all, I like the way this razor looks. The textured black handle is very elegant. Blade loading is obviously very simple - it's a Twist-To-Open razor.
The razor is very well balanced and a joy to hold.
The Schick Krona is a very forgiving razor. Even I have to call it mild. Not once did I think it would slice me up. After my usual four passes I am however quite surprised at how efficient it was. I had an excellent shave and there is not a hint of stubble left anywhere.
I think this would make an excellent daily shaver for non-thrill-seekers, that's people who don't look for very aggressive razors (I don't) and people who don't get a kick out of using 100 year old contraptions (I do).
Those razors are readily available, but almost exclusively from the US with shipping costs higher than the price of the razor. If you see one for a good price, go for it. Or you could try this one for free.

Day 2 - Shave 2
  • De Vergulde Hand shaving soap
  • TOST LE 2018 brush
  • Schick Krona
  • Astra Superior Platinum blade (2)
  • Alum block
  • Alcolado Glacial
Today's shave almost didn't happen.
Yesterday's shave with the Krona was so close that I would have gotten away without a shave today. Quite impressive for a fairly mild razor.
Today's shave was just as impressive. The Astra blade on its second outing was as smooth as they can be. Especially going ATG under the nose was memorable. No tugging, no danger, no stubble afterwards.
I received a half litre bottle of Alcolado Glacial today and felt the need to use up the emergency rest in the last 125ml bottle I had, so I could fill it up with the new juice.
I am again very clean shaven and extremely refreshed.
The Schick Krona has so far impressed me immensely. If I was a DE only shaver I'd make sure that I have one in my arsenal.
I think I'll at least try the Schick Krona with a Feather blade before passing it on.

Day 4 - Shave 3

  • De Vergulde Hand shaving soap
  • TOST LE 2018 brush
  • Schick Krona
  • Feather blade (1)
  • Alum block
  • Hagner Tobacco ASL

I wanted to try the Schick Krona with a Feather blade. It took me while to find what I now believe is my last Feather blade. I won't buy any more, but only for the reason that I mostly shave with SE razors and I have hundreds of DE blades left - mostly Voskhod and PolSilver. Once I'm down to less than 100 DE blades - some time in the mid to late 2020s - I would buy Feather blades again. Maybe I'll buy 10 for pass arounds.
Today's shave - no need to go into too much detail - was really quite good. The Schick Krona is a great razor for Feather blades. Two days worth of stubble were removed with the utmost efficiency, while the razor glided across my face smoothly and with ease.
At no time did I fear that the Krona/Feather combo would nick me and sure enough they didn't. It was a truly wonderful shave - full on BBS, no irritation.
I like this razor. Another shave with my last Feather blade and I might be able to let go.

I had some more shaves with the Schick Krona, the above mentioned Feather and a Voskhod blade.
All were extremely good shaves. The Schick Krona looks good, handles well, it's TTO (which is cool - I'm easy to please) and gives great shaves.
It's a razor I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a classy razor that won't break the
bank - with a bit of luck and patience you could pick one up for 20 quid.
The razor is now on its way to Glen_Lee on TSR.

First shave and I've got to say it not a bad razor at all!
Mild and similar in feel to a Gillette Tech. Not a lot of blade feel, but you know when it is working; the built in angle finder makes it difficult to go wrong. Surprisingly though I had quite a bit of AS sting and I am not as closely shaven as yesterday with the Charcol.

I like it...

The Krona is a great daily shave in the same vain as the Gillette Tech is. Not terribly exciting, but does the job nonetheless. Cheap as chip and would make a great travel razor.
Same closeness of shave as yesterday without the AS sting.

Nice
