Odd Foods - Misc Shell Fish.

I have mentioned previously how in UK we rather like things like Boil in the bag Kippers.
Today, having started to feel better after being in hospital, I decided to look for a favourite of mine.Historically around UK there were things known as sea food stalls, which sold different kinds of hard/soft Shellfish- Prawns, Shrimps .These were often attatched to Pubs/ Markets and opened over weekends.

In Kent they also sold the likes of Jellied EeI knew there was one at a Garden Centre near me, so went there. The old Wooden Stall has gone replaced with a lovely refrigerated cabin - selling Oysters, and varieties of Prawns, Langoustine,Shrimps, crab sticks, and Cooked Mussels, Cockles, and Whelks - even dressed crab.
I got a pot of my favoured Kentish Whelks + some Welsh Cockles for a after Lunch snack. I just wonder what those from abroad think of such things, and how these UK foods are viewed by our younger UK citizens.

I grew up so far from salt water that those foods were uncommon as a result never developed a taste for them. Later in my travels there were plenty of place that had them, but I never considered trying them even then.

Jellied Eel sounds disgusting. I'm sure I would much prefer it grilled, deep fried or sauteed with garlic.
Other than that, I would love to feast on all the other selections. I had to look up Langoustine and Whelks as I am not familiar with those items.

I was born and mostly raised in some of the grottier parts of the periphery of London and had grandparents who ended up on the Kent seaside with the other set up in Conwy. I never avoided jellied eel but whelks I could stomach, cockles quite enjoy, and most other seafood was absolutely devoured. Growing up, my brother’s favourite food was mussels.

I spent a crazy, debauched year abroad ‘studying’ in Belgium when I was 20. I met another Brit and took her on a date to a posh place on Place Sainte-Catherine. I watched my choice of restaurant backfire immediately as a plate of whelks as an hors d’oeuvre was whipped in front of her. Her experience of seafood was limited to Captain Birdseye. That probably remains the case, as I never saw her again after the morning after…

Extreme sharpness is ephemeral!
I enjoy most seafood, but I'm not a fan of Whelks or Eels. I love all fish, a favourite would be a nice piece of Monkfish wrapped in bacon or a piece of Halibut. Fried fish, then it's a nice piece of haddock with thin, crispy batter. It's also a yes to Squid, Octopus, Shrimp, and Oysters.

Craster kippers are still the best, freshly smoked and bought from the Craster smoke house.
.
I was up in Northumberland for a short break only a few weeks ago ...

We had a meal in Craster at The Jolly Fisherman (naturally) and for that meal, I had the local crab (of course) but enjoyed Craster kippers for breakfast each day at the place we were staying.
