New UK Razor Replater

Forum GOD!
Hello all,

As the title says, I have discovered a new, UK based chap that replates razors. He’s not just a plating service but a razor enthusiast who has his own YouTube channel, Facebook group and Instagram page. He also hones restores straight razors but I’m not pushing this service as we have gents on here that can do that for you. I will take one for the team and report back.

His name is John June of JJ Shaves which is also his popular Facebook group. I found found him via another very popular Facebook group, Vintage Gillette Safety Razors where he’d shown before and after pictures of his work which came with great feedback.

Now the very interesting part, prices below.

Nickel only at the moment:

Fatboy, Slim, TTOs: £25 which includes careful fettling to ensure it adjusts properly, stiff mechanisms loosened, no lazy doors and repainting of numbers, etc.

2 & 3 piece (Tech, NEW, OLD, etc): £15

Add on £5 for postage and that’s it.

He seems a really genuine fellow and happy for me to send off my razors now then pay for them once complete. He posts regularly on both of the above Facebook groups and has had excellent feedback from several members there.

As mentioned above, he only offers nickel replating at present but advised me that once the plating business starts turning a profit, he will invest said profits into extra materials to offer other options such as gold and hopefully one day, rhodium.

I think most of us will be delighted just with nickel plating given the low prices and dearth of UK replating options in recent years.

I will request his email address for those of us who do not use social media and will post more pictures later.

Thank you,
Graeme

Good evening chaps,

I have been in touch with John and he has authorised me to share his email address on an open forum: jjohnjjune@gmail.com

John is very approachable and will likely reply very promptly as he has done with me.

If you do use Facebook or Instagram, I would urge you to check him out there. I only just returned to FB recently where I discovered his services on the aforementioned group.

I don’t frequent Instagram but I’m sure you’ll find him easily enough.

More pictures? Alrighty then…

Some of John’s equipment:

And another re-plate job:

He’s clearly serious about this and gave me a more detailed price list:

JJ Shaves

Gillette adjustable (and similar)
Tune up £10 per razor
Sterilised, ultrasonic cleaned through two stages, function checked, blade gaps checked and reset to factory settings.

Re-plate whole razor £25
Re-plate include a tune up

Re-plate doors £5

Non-adjustable razors
Re-plate two/three piece razors £15
Postage £5 per shipment

John assures me that he strips, cleans and polishes all razors thoroughly beforehand.

My well worn Micromatic Open Comb:

I contacted John and asked if he could remove the chrome plate back to brass. Initially he tried but couldn't remove the chrome. So I gifted him the razor for his trouble, telling him I would probably PIF it anyway.
Long story short, he came back to me after a few days with a video showing me he had invested in some chrome stripping chemicals and had in fact succeeded in taking it back to brass, and said to me, it's yours, just pay for my service.
Here it is:

I'll let you decide how happy I am.

That is quite stunning. Unfortunately, my MMOC is in very good nick.
But I could think of some razors I own that could do with a bit of TLC.
A nickel-plated Kampfe Star from 1902? Tempting. I've got one that won't clean up.
I refuse to do Facebook though. That leaves email. Hmmm... he needs to join the forum.
Somebody should tell him.

John’s got his fingers in so many virtual pies at present and with having the replating business, honing service plus making a beginners straight razor as well as looking after his household, joining more forums may be straw and camels back. I will suggest it to him though. His presence on FB within the wet shaving community is pretty significant and although I dislike Facebook in general, the wet shaving groups I’m a member of are great. I’ve been made very welcome in every single group, my confidence with SotD photographs has grown and I’m in the infant stages of starting a part time hobby outlet business.

I posted my filthy English FB Gillette Tech plus my #58 to him. A full replate of the Tech is just £15 and to fix and tune up the stiff mechanism and suspected wonky doors of the #58 plus a full replate is just £35. Add on a pearl diver for postage and you’ve got great value. Of course the proof of the pudding is in the eating but I’ve seen some of his work on FB and it looks fir. I can’t wait to post photos of my two Gillettes upon their return.

Watch this space as they say! 😉

Join our wee Traditional Wet Shaving group Andreas - I’ll look after you and together we shall conquer the world! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!

Erm Matron, I think my injection is overdue and I’m cold so could you tie my straight jacket on, please? Theres a dear..

I have resisted joining Facebook since I first heard of it. I will not cave in now.

This is worth knowing about.

I know next to nothing about replating other than I have walked around commercial chrome platers and was amazed at the number different processes to produce the end result, one of the most attractive finishes, even nicer than chrome was nickel plating, perhaps not quite as tough as chrome but not such an issue on a razor.

I must look into whether plating at home could be nickel.
