You maybe correct. I think it is just personal preference, I find the rim brakes are more effective and I can judge them better so that I can just touch lock-up for maximum braking. My discs are cheapo's and to be fair the feel from the front brake is great but the pressure required for maximum braking on the rear brake requires handful of brake lever.
It sounds like they are cable discs? Awful things, I swapped my calipers out for TRP HYRDs. Much, much better... Still not in the same league as full on hydro's though...

They are very cool and in the case of those particular ones I used bloody expensive.
Seriously though they were originally for snow and sand, bigger contact area, lower pressures (slightly)
The larger volume also acts as a suspension
