We just had one cut down that had been growing for at least 50 years. It took my wife and I two months to rake up the leaves in winter. Instead of leaves, we now have grass.

Difficult to beat an acer palmatum for foliage colour and form. Tried growing a few smaller varieties up here but the wind gives 'em a right battering so I went with a red leaved Norway maple (acer platanoides 'Crimson Sentry'). It's getting a big beastie already.

Nice find, @Wayne !

I remember a few years ago a lady asked me to throw away an old poinsettia plant she had from Christmas. The pot was dry, only one leaf was still green as it has been left on a dark garage. I decided to take it home to see if I could save it. I managed to keep it alive and healthy for another three years. It did finally give up the ghost but, later rather than sooner.

As Graeme said, keep it out of the wind, a dappled sunlit position is ideal, and it will need regular watering - even during rainy periods.
