Hi folks,

Just upgraded from a cheap shavette to a lovely new Boker and it's basically arrived blunt which is a little frustrating considering the price tag. Had the unit replaced as well and this second one is somehow worse. I’ve heard great things about Jamie Mahoney’s work on these forums and was wondering if he’s still around or taking on honing jobs at the moment. I just need the edge brought up to a high standard so I can experience it properly for the first time.

If anyone can help me get in touch or recommend the best route, I’d really appreciate it.

Many thanks!

- Matt

Depending where you are located will make a difference. @JamieM comes highly recommended.

When I got into honed straight razors I learned on a set of films attached to a marble tile using water tension. There are plenty of videos using this method and the films are available through eBay and Amazon. Cost was $25 for films and $3 for the tile. I also used diamond paste on balsa wood for a finish.

Thankyou @Twelvefret and @Holyzeus much appreciated! I would definitely like to learn, but right now I have no baseline for what a properly honed straight razor even feels like so I'd like skilled hands on it the first few times to fix it up and show me it's potential.

Can't seem to work out how to message Jamie directly, been a while since I've used a forum but I look forward to hearing from him if he's available. His profile says he's in South Wales which makes two of us, currently based in Cardiff :)

Buy a few Gold Dollars. They are cheap.
Buy a 3000/ 8000 and a 12000 stone and learn to hone. That is as easy as brushing your teeth.
Practice on the cheap Gold Dollars.
You can't t let someone else sharpen your razor.
Learn it yourself.
Be independant.
A sharpened razor lasts maybe 25 shaves With my beard
Then it needs a slight touch up with the finisher.
I shave every day.I use 5 blades .So after 4 months or so they all geg a touch up.

Forum GOD!
@JamieM is the gold standard for any razor honing and is a damn kind and helpful fella to boot. Not surprised he answered and got things sorted so swiftly. Our very own straight razor guru but he’s not one for fancy titles or gimmicks. I have had good cause to be thankful to Jamie many times over the years and not just to do with honing. Cheers mate!
