I have a GEM Razor and ordered just ordered 10 Razor blades to see how I get on with it.

Theyre spring loaded into the box and the top one slides out the gap and the top space is then filled by the blade beneath.
So far all my packs have come in a transparent box described as above but I can imagine that the operation may not be so easy to envisage with an opaque version if that's what you have.

They're bleedin' awful blades, sadly. I've got around 20 single edge razors of varying makes and eras (eebai used to be so cheap), so I do mean "sadly".

I started using the vintage ones (1920s-1980s), which need cleaning and often re-sharpening. This is a hassle, but I cannot get along with the repurposed window scrapers.

Has anyone else found that?

They’re really quite sharp and smooth. Hold the cap flat to your face and try again. (Edited to add: A light touch and stretching your skin can make a big difference!) Practice makes perfect. Which GEM do you have?

I bought 100 of the PTFE coated gem blades from Connacht. I've found them to be excellent in 3 gem razors. A blackland sabre, Eveready natural angle and the shield gem razor. These are all solid bar so can't vouch for them in a gem open comb. Usually get 6-7 shaves from each blade.

I'm not sure if this is aimed at me - that isn't clear, but if it was thanks for the reply - but I've tried using them hundreds upon hundreds of times, probably close to 1000 blades at this point, with a variety of GEM/Radio/Starr/Etc razors.

I just cannot get along with them.

Much prefer the old thick spine blades.

Hi, yes. I was aiming

You’ve obviously given the blades a more than fair trial. My initial experience with GEM blades lasted only through a 100 pack. I liked double edge blades so much better (and still do). You have much more stamina than I have! I put the last dozen blades in a box and hid them for 7 or 8 years, and only came back to GEM razors and blades this year. But now, I think they’re wonderful shave tools. My technique has evolved and I can now shave with the format at will with incredible bbs results.

I started a Micromatic Monday on another forum that continues according to my friends. Apparently, it served to introduce several about the old GEM blade holders. The TTO mechanism on the GEM are superior to anything Gillette produced, but only in my opinion of course.

I had tried a sample pack of GEM type and found the coated blades to be more comfortable. Having used the Micromatic before learning to use a shavette, I felt it had served as a good primer for straight use.

When you don't use the proper technique with a GEM razor, which is different from what you use with a DE, you will never get a smooth comfortable shave no matter what blade you use. I found the Personna GEM PTFE coated blades to be the best of the bunch and last me twice as long as any DE blade I have tried.
